Etsy Printable Size Guide: Which Sizes to Include in Your Digital Download
Your buyers frame at 8Γ10, 16Γ20, A4, 24Γ36 and a dozen sizes in between. You don't need a file for each one. You need one file per aspect ratio, exported big enough for the largest print. Five ratios cover the common frames, and five is exactly how many files Etsy lets you upload. Here are the ratios, the pixel sizes at 300 DPI, the file sizes to expect, and what to do when they don't fit.
Which sizes should you include in an Etsy printable?
Include one file per aspect ratio, not one per size. A ratio is the shape of the print. 8Γ10, 16Γ20 and 24Γ30 are all 4:5: the same shape at different scales. One 4:5 file exported at 24Γ30 prints sharp at every one of them, because shrinking an image loses nothing. Enlarging it does.
Different ratios are different shapes. Print an 8Γ10 file at 8Γ12 and it comes out two inches short. The buyer either crops your art or gets white bars.
These five ratios are the usual set:
- 2:3 for 4Γ6 up to 24Γ36
- 3:4 for 6Γ8 up to 18Γ24
- 4:5 for 8Γ10 up to 24Γ30
- ISO A-series for A5 up to A1, the international paper sizes
- 11Γ14, a shape of its own

Pixels are inches times 300. For A-sizes, it's millimetres divided by 25.4, times 300. Export each ratio at the size in bold. It scales down to every size below it.

| 11:14 ratio | ||
| 11 Γ 14 in | 3300 Γ 4200 | 13.9 |
Three sizes that trip people up:
- 11Γ14 isn't 4:5. A 4:5 file printed 11 inches wide comes out 13.75 inches tall, a quarter inch short. That's why it gets its own file. 22Γ28 is the same shape at double the size, 6600 Γ 8400 px.
- 5Γ7 is nearly ISO. 5:7 is 1:1.4, and the A-series is 1:1.414. Print the A-series file 5 inches wide and it's 7.07 inches tall. Under 2 mm gets trimmed, so the A-series file covers 5Γ7.
- US Letter (8.5Γ11) matches none of the five. The 11Γ14 file printed 8.5 inches wide comes out 10.8 inches tall. Close, but it leaves a strip of white.
The DPI number stored in the file is only a label. What prints sharp is the pixel count. A 7200 Γ 10800 file tagged 72 DPI still holds a sharp 24Γ36.
How big is a 24Γ36 printable file?
24Γ36 at 300 DPI is 7200 Γ 10800 pixels, 77.8 million of them. Uncompressed, at 3 bytes per pixel, that's 233 MB. What lands on disk depends on the format and on your art.
We measured it. On 21 October 2026 we made four test images at 7200 Γ 10800 in ImageMagick 7 and saved each as JPG at three quality settings, and as PNG:
| Test image, 24 Γ 36 in | JPG 90 | JPG 95 | JPG 100 | PNG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat shapes on a plain background | 1.0 MB | 1.1 MB | 1.3 MB | 0.4 MB |
| Smooth two-colour gradient | 1.0 MB | 1.3 MB | 2.1 MB | 0.3 MB |
| Soft painterly texture | 6.1 MB | 10.3 MB | 35.8 MB | 39.0 MB |
| Fine grain on every pixel | 49.4 MB | 78.6 MB | 148.9 MB | 170.0 MB |
Highlighted figures are over Etsy's 20 MB per file. These are test images, not real artwork, so read them as an estimate of the range. Your art lands somewhere inside it. The more fine detail and grain it has, the higher it sits.
Two things stand out. Flat designs are tiny at any setting. And on detailed art, the quality slider matters more than you'd think: the same texture went from 6.1 MB to 35.8 MB between quality 90 and 100.
JPG, PDF or PNG for printables?
- JPG for anything with texture. Paint, photos, watercolour, grain. It was the smallest format for every detailed image we tested, and it opens on any phone or computer.
- PNG for flat designs. Type, line art, solid shapes. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, and in our test it beat JPG on flat art. On detailed art it was the biggest file of all.
- PDF to lock the print size. A PDF has a page size, so a 24Γ36 in page prints at 24Γ36 in. It doesn't make the file smaller. Our PDF holding the 6.1 MB texture JPG was also 6.1 MB. Treat PDF as a wrapper, not a compressor.
Pick one image format per artwork. A JPG and a PNG of the same ratio is the same pixels twice, and it doubles your file count.

How to fit five ratios into Etsy's five files
Etsy allows up to five files per digital listing, 20 MB each (Etsy Help, checked 21 October 2026). One file per ratio fills it exactly:
2x3_4x6-to-24x36.jpgat 7200 Γ 108003x4_6x8-to-18x24.jpgat 5400 Γ 72004x5_8x10-to-24x30.jpgat 7200 Γ 9000ISO_A5-to-A1.jpgat 7016 Γ 993311x14.jpgat 3300 Γ 4200
Name files like this. Buyers see exactly the names you upload, and you can't edit them afterwards. Names can be up to 70 letters, numbers, periods, underscores or hyphens. The buyer with a 16Γ20 frame finds the 4:5 file without messaging you.
Etsy doesn't allow variations on digital items, so you can't sell sizes as options. Every buyer gets all five files. Put your size chart in a listing photo and the description, because there's no slot left for a print guide.
What breaks the five-file fit
Any one of these puts you over:
- A PDF of each ratio. Five JPGs plus five PDFs is ten files.
- PNG versions. Ten files again.
- One more ratio. Add US Letter for home printing and you have six.
- A print guide or licence PDF. Six.
- A gallery set. Three artworks in five ratios is 15 files.
- One big, detailed file. The 24Γ36 file holds the most pixels, and A1 and 24Γ30 aren't far behind. Our grain test was 49.4 MB at quality 90. One file over 20 MB and Etsy refuses the upload.
How sellers get back under:
- Zip by ratio. Put the JPG and PDF of one ratio in one zip. Still 20 MB per zip, and zipping JPGs barely shrinks them. Zip files on Etsy has the details.
- Shrink the big file. Lower the JPG quality or drop the largest size. That costs you sharpness or a size buyers wanted.
- Move the files off Etsy. A Google Drive link in a PDF works, with real risks. A delivery service checks each buyer's order first.
Every workaround, with its cost to your buyer, is in how to sell more than 5 files in one Etsy listing. For the size side, see the guide to Etsy's file size limit.
Deliver every ratio at full size
Our printable wall art guide walks through a full set. The short version, with OrderFiles:
- Upload every ratio in JPG and PDF, at full resolution. Files can be up to 5 GB each, with no cap on files per product. Put each ratio in its own folder.
- Forward your Etsy order emails to your shop's private OrderFiles address. It's one email rule and about five minutes.
- Make the listing's digital file a small PDF holding your OrderFiles link. Etsy hands it over the moment the buyer pays.
Your buyer unlocks the download page with their Etsy order number or purchase email. They take the one file for their frame, or everything as one ZIP with your folders kept. OrderFiles is independent, not part of Etsy, so your listing, reviews and checkout stay where they are.
