How to Sell More Than 5 Files in One Etsy Listing

October 21, 2026 Β· 6 min read

You can't upload more than five files to one Etsy listing. Etsy stops you at five, and each one can be 20 MB at most. You can still deliver more than five files to your buyer. There are five ways to do it. Here's each one, worked through on a real product, with what it costs the person who bought it.

Can you upload more than 5 files to Etsy?

No. Etsy's help page How to Manage Your Digital Listings (checked 21 October 2026) sets the rules:

  • Instant downloads: up to five files per listing, 20 MB each.
  • Made-to-order downloads: the same. When you complete the order, you can attach up to five files of up to 20 MB each.
  • No variations. Etsy doesn't allow variations on digital items. So there's no "choose your colour" dropdown that hands over a different file.

No setting raises the cap, and no paid plan does either. The real question is how to fit more than five files into five slots, or how to go around them.

How to sell more than 5 files on Etsy: a worked example

Say you sell a digital planner in 12 colourways. Each colourway is its own PDF of about 6 MB. You also include a one-page "how to import" guide.

That's 13 files and about 72 MB. Etsy gives you five slots of 20 MB each. Here's how each workaround handles it.

Printables hit the same wall. Five aspect ratios in JPG and PDF is ten files. The printable size guide works through that one.

1. Zip several files into one

Etsy accepts .zip files, and a zip counts as one file. So you can put several files inside it.

For the planner: four colourways at 6 MB is 24 MB, over the limit. So it's three per zip. Four zips of about 18 MB each, plus the import guide, makes five files. It fits, just.

What it costs:

  • Zipping doesn't make files smaller. We zipped two JPGs and a PDF, 56.6 MB in total. The zip came out at 55.6 MB, less than 2% smaller. The 20 MB limit applies to the zip, so you still split by size.
  • The buyer has to unzip. On a computer that's a double-click. On a phone it's the Files app, and that's where buyers get stuck. Our guide to zip files on Etsy has the steps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
  • The buyer who wants Sage downloads Sage, Navy and Blush. They have to work out which zip holds their colour.
  • It breaks at the 13th colourway. Add one more, or let a file grow, and you're re-zipping the lot.

Over the limit right now?

2. Merge your PDFs into one

If everything is a PDF, merge files instead of zipping them. On a Mac, Preview does it. Open the PDFs, choose View > Thumbnails, then drag pages from one sidebar to the other (Apple's steps).

For the planner: all 12 colourways in one PDF is 72 MB. Too big. So it's groups of three again: four merged PDFs of about 18 MB, plus the guide.

What it costs:

  • The 20 MB limit still applies. Merging cuts the file count, not the size.
  • The buyer gets colourways they didn't ask for, stacked in one long file.
  • It only works for PDFs. Fonts, images, brushes and video stay separate files.

Merging beats zipping on one point: a PDF opens on a phone without unzipping.

3. Split it across several listings, or add a bundle listing

Put four colourways in each of three listings. Or list each colourway on its own, then add a "complete set" listing for buyers who want everything.

What it costs:

  • The buyer pays more than once to get the full set, or hunts for the right listing.
  • The bundle listing has five slots too. So the complete set ends up as zips again, and you're back at option 1.
  • More listings to keep current. Change the design and you update three listings, not one.

Splitting works when the parts sell on their own. It's awkward when they're one product.

4. Upload a PDF with a Google Drive or Dropbox link

Put all 13 files in a shared Drive or Dropbox folder. Paste the link into a one-page PDF. Upload that PDF as the listing's only file.

This removes both limits. There's no file count, and the size is whatever your cloud storage holds.

What it costs:

  • The link opens for anyone who has it. Paid or not. A buyer can paste it into a group chat, and nothing stops the next person.
  • The link breaks if the folder moves. Rename it, reorganise your Drive or change accounts, and every past buyer has a dead link.
  • The files count against your own storage. Your personal account becomes your shop's warehouse.

Delivering a purchased file through a Drive link is allowed. Moving the sale itself off Etsy is not. Our post on Google Drive links on Etsy covers what Etsy's policy says and the risks in full. For a side-by-side with OrderFiles, see Google Drive links vs OrderFiles.

5. Use a delivery service

Same pattern as option 4. The listing's file is a small PDF with a link. The difference is what sits behind the link. A delivery service checks that the person opening it bought the product, then hands over the files.

What it costs:

  • A monthly fee. Cloud folders come with your storage plan. Delivery services charge for the checking.
  • A one-time setup. The service needs to know about your Etsy orders, so it knows who bought what.

Which way should you pick?

The short version:

  • Five files or fewer, each under 20 MB: upload them as they are.
  • Six to about fifteen small files: zip or merge them into groups under 20 MB.
  • A catalogue that keeps growing, or any file over 20 MB: move the files behind a link. A Drive link if you accept the risks. A delivery service if you don't.

If size is the real problem, the guide to Etsy's file size limit covers that side.

How OrderFiles delivers more than five files

OrderFiles is a delivery service built for this. It's independent, not part of Etsy. You keep your listing, your reviews and Etsy's checkout.

For the planner:

  1. Upload all 13 files to one product, titled exactly like your Etsy listing. There's no cap on files per product. Group them in folders if you like. Files can be up to 5 GB each, with 50 GB of storage.
  2. Forward your Etsy order emails to your shop's private OrderFiles address. It's one email rule and about five minutes. The app has the steps for Gmail, Outlook and iCloud.
  3. Upload a small PDF holding your OrderFiles link as the listing's digital file. Etsy hands it over the moment the buyer pays.

Your buyer opens the link and unlocks it with their Etsy order number or purchase email. OrderFiles checks it against the order you forwarded. The download page shows your shop's name and the product. They take the Sage PDF on its own, or everything at once as one ZIP with your folders kept.

The link alone opens nothing without a matching order. Refund someone, mark their order cancelled, and their downloads stop.

No cap on files per product, files up to 5 GB each. Free for 14 days, then €9/month. A card is needed to start, and there's no charge if you cancel before the trial ends.
