Zip Files on Etsy: How to Bundle Digital Downloads (and When Not To)

October 21, 2026 Β· 6 min read

Yes, you can upload a zip file to Etsy. It's the usual way to fit more than five files into one digital listing. But the zip is still capped at 20 MB, and buyers on phones need extra steps to open it. Here's when zipping helps, how to do it on a Mac or a PC, and what to do when the zip is too big.

Can you upload a zip file to Etsy?

Yes. Etsy's help page How to Manage Your Digital Listings (checked 21 October 2026) lists .zip among the accepted file types. A zip follows the same rules as any other file:

  • 20 MB per file. A zip counts as one file, so the zip itself has to be under 20 MB.
  • Five files per listing. Five zips of 20 MB each is 100 MB, the most one listing can hold.
  • .zip is the only archive type on the list. Save as .zip, not .rar or .7z.
  • Names are fixed. Buyers see the file name you upload. You can't change it afterwards.

When zipping your Etsy files helps

Zip when:

  • You have lots of small files. Clip art, SVG cut files, planner pages, stickers. Fifty PNGs won't fit in five slots. One zip will, if it stays under 20 MB.
  • Folders matter. Sizes in one folder, colourways in another. A zip keeps the folders, so the buyer unzips a tidy set instead of a pile.
  • Your buyers are on computers. Unzipping on a laptop is a double-click.

Don't bother when:

  • One file is already over 20 MB. Zipping won't get it under. Formats that are already compressed, like JPG, PNG and most PDFs, barely shrink in a zip.
  • You have five files or fewer, each under 20 MB. Upload them as they are. Every zip is one more step for the buyer.

For the other ways past the five-file cap, see how to sell more than 5 files in one Etsy listing.

How to zip files on a Mac

From Apple's guide, Zip and unzip files and folders on Mac:

  1. Put the files in one folder, named after the product, with any subfolders you want.
  2. Control-click the folder, then choose Compress.
  3. A zip with the folder's name appears next to it. If you compress several loose items at once, the zip is called Archive.zip, so rename it.

Zip the folder, not the loose files. Then the buyer gets one named folder when they unzip.

How to zip files on Windows

From Microsoft's Zip and unzip files:

  1. Find the folder you want to zip.
  2. Right-click it, or press and hold, then choose Show more options, then Send to, then Compressed (zipped) folder.
  3. A zipped folder with the same name appears in the same place. To rename it, right-click it and choose Rename.

Now check the size. On a Mac, select the zip and press Command-I. On Windows, right-click it and choose Properties. Over 20 MB, and Etsy refuses the upload.

Opening a zip on a phone: where buyers get stuck

If someone buys on their phone, the zip lands on their phone. That's where zips get awkward.

  • The Etsy app can't download files. Etsy says buyers have to sign in on a mobile browser or a computer to download a digital purchase. (How to Download a Digital Item)
  • Etsy tells phone buyers they may need a file manager or another app to unzip.
  • On iPhone, Safari downloads go to the Downloads folder in the Files app: open Files, tap Browse, then iCloud Drive, then Downloads (Apple). Tapping the zip creates a folder with the files inside (Apple).
  • On Android, it depends on the phone's files app. In Google's Files by Google, buyers select the .zip, tap Extract, then Done, and the files land in the same folder. Google says only .zip files are supported there. (Files by Google Help)

None of this is hard once you know it. But every step is a place a buyer stops and messages you instead of printing. Two things help:

  • Say it in the listing. "This download is a ZIP file", plus the phone steps above.
  • Add a short instructions PDF as its own file, outside the zip. Our download instructions template has wording you can copy.

Name your zip files and folders clearly

Buyers see exactly the names you upload, and Etsy won't let you edit them later. Etsy allows up to 70 characters: letters, numbers, periods, underscores and hyphens. So use hyphens or underscores, not spaces.

A pattern that works:

  • The zip: shop, product and contents, like YourShop_Botanical-Set_8x10-A4.zip.
  • Folders inside: one per size, colourway or format, like 01_8x10, 02_A4, 03_11x14. The numbers keep them in order.
  • Files: say what they are. Fern_8x10_300dpi.jpg, not final-final-2.jpg.
  • A start-here file: 00_Start-Here.pdf, with how to open and print the files, plus your license. More on licenses in how to protect your digital downloads on Etsy.

What to do when your zip is over 20 MB

  1. Split it into several complete zips. Group by size or colourway. Keep each under 20 MB, so each one opens on its own. You get up to five.
  2. Avoid split archives. Some tools cut one big archive into numbered parts. Etsy's accepted list has .zip, but not part files like .z01 or .001. And buyers would need every part in the same folder before any of it opens. Miss one part and the set won't open.
  3. Shrink the files. Lower the JPG quality or the pixel size. Fine for previews and phone wallpapers. Not for large prints.
  4. Move the big files off Etsy. A Google Drive link in a PDF works, with its own risks. Or use a delivery service built for it.

Every workaround, with what each one costs your buyer, is in the guide to Etsy's file size limit.

Skip the zip: let buyers pick single files or one ZIP

With OrderFiles, you don't zip anything. It's an independent service that works alongside your Etsy shop, so you keep your listing, reviews and checkout.

  • Upload files as they are, up to 5 GB each, with no cap on how many files a product holds. Put them in folders if you like.
  • Buyers choose. On the download page, they take files one by one, so a phone buyer grabs just the file they need. Or they take everything at once as one ZIP, with your folders kept.
  • Etsy still delivers instantly. Your listing's digital file is a small PDF holding the OrderFiles link, so buyers have it the moment they pay. They unlock it with their Etsy order number or purchase email.
