Etsy Digital Download Not Working? What to Tell Your Buyer

A buyer writes: "I paid, but I can't download it." Usually the file is fine. Something between Etsy's checkout and their screen got in the way. Here's how to tell which thing, fix it, and reply in one message.

Why an Etsy digital download isn't working

Ask your buyer one question first: what do you see? Their answer points to the cause.

How do I get my digital download from Etsy? Send your buyer this

Etsy keeps every digital purchase on the buyer's Purchases page. To get there they sign in to Etsy.com, go to Your account, then Purchases, then select Download Files next to the order. Guest buyers have no Purchases page. Their link is in the receipt email.

Copy and send:

Hi [name], thanks so much for your order! Here's how to get your files:

1. Open Safari or Chrome (not the Etsy app) and sign in at etsy.com
2. Go to Your account, then Purchases
3. Select Download Files next to this order

Checked out as a guest? Your download link is in the Etsy receipt email sent after you paid. Search your inbox for transaction@etsy.com.

Etsy digital download not showing (they're on the app)

Phone buyers hit this one. Etsy's app can't download digital files. Etsy's help page says it plainly: "You can't download a digital purchase through the Etsy app at this time."

Your buyer opens the order in the app, looks for the files, and finds nothing. The fix is a browser. Safari, Chrome, anything. Sign in to Etsy there and go to Purchases. The message above covers it.

If your files come as a ZIP, warn phone buyers too. Etsy notes that on a phone or tablet they may need a file manager or an app to unzip it. More on that in our guide to ZIP files on Etsy.

Etsy digital download not received

Etsy emails the buyer when their files are ready, with a View your files on Etsy button. When that email goes missing, Etsy's advice is:

• Check spam or junk. On Gmail, check the Social and Promotions tabs too.
• Add transaction@account.etsy.com or noreply@etsy.com to contacts, so the next one lands.

The email is only a shortcut. The files sit on the Purchases page either way.

Guest checkout

A buyer who checked out without an account gets the download link in the receipt email sent after purchase. If they want the order in an account, Etsy lets them connect a guest order: open the receipt from transaction@etsy.com, select View your order, then sign in or create an account. That step doesn't work in the Etsy app.

If they've lost access to that inbox, Etsy sends them back to you. You'll need to get the files to them another way.

Etsy instant download not working right after checkout

"Instant" means instant once payment is confirmed. Etsy says that with PayPal or a card, "it may take a few minutes for your download link to be sent." If your buyer writes two minutes after paying, ask them to wait a few minutes and refresh their Purchases page.

Etsy digital download says not yet paid

This isn't a bug, and you can't fix it. Etsy screens and reviews orders to protect against fraud. While it does, the payment shows as processing and the Download Files button is gray.

Here's what Etsy says about it, from the buyer's side and the seller's side:

• Most orders process within 72 hours. Some take longer.
• The buyer may see a pending charge. It's only finalized once the order processes.
• You see "You have processing orders" instead of the order in your Completed tab.
• Nobody can cancel the order while it's processing.
• When it clears, you and the buyer each get a confirmation email. If it fails, the item goes back up for sale and Etsy tells the buyer.

Don't send the files by hand to get around it. Etsy tells sellers not to ship a processing order, because a failed payment can mean no payment at all. The same risk applies to a file you email early.

Copy and send:

Hi [name], thanks for your order! Etsy is still checking the payment, which is why the download button is gray. It's a standard Etsy security check, and most orders clear within 72 hours.

You'll get an email from Etsy the moment it's done, and your files will be waiting under Purchases. Sorry for the wait!

Ask which link. Etsy's own button and the link inside your PDF break for different reasons.

Etsy's Download Files button

Etsy's troubleshooting steps:

• Nothing happens on click. Usually the browser. Turn off ad blockers and toolbars, then try again.
• "The file is corrupted." Delete the download and download it again.
• It won't open. They may be missing the program for that file type. The type is listed under Highlights on your listing.

The link inside your PDF

Etsy caps a listing at five files of 20MB each. The usual workaround for bigger products is a PDF holding a link. Etsy can't help your buyer with that link. It's yours. Three things break it:

• Google Drive asks them to request access. The file is set to Restricted. Google's sharing help says Restricted means only people with access can open it. Switch General access to Anyone with the link, as Viewer. The same link then works for every past buyer, so there's nothing to resend.
• The link isn't clickable. The PDF was saved as an image, or flattened. In Canva, links only work in a PDF download, and not in a flattened one.
• The file is gone. You deleted or replaced it, and the old link points nowhere. Re-share it and message the buyers who have the old PDF.

Do Etsy download links expire?

Etsy's don't. Etsy says there are "generally no limits for when or how many times you can download a file," as long as the order hasn't been canceled or removed. Canceling the order is the only way to take a buyer's access away.

A link you put inside a PDF is different. It lasts exactly as long as you keep that file and its sharing setting.

Stop the same messages coming back

Most of these messages are predictable, so answer them before they're asked:

• Put a short "how to download" block in every listing description: use a browser, not the app, and guest links are in the receipt email.
• Use Etsy's note for buyers. It shows on the buyer's Downloads page for every digital listing in your shop.
• Name files clearly before uploading. Buyers see the same names you do, and Etsy can't rename them later.
• Test every link in your PDFs while signed out.
