How to Sell Sublimation Designs Over 20MB on Etsy

A sublimation design isn't a file. It's one piece of artwork exported at the exact size of every blank it's meant for β€” 11 oz mug wrap, 15 oz wrap, 20 oz skinny tumbler, adult tee, youth tee, toddler, pocket. All at 300 DPI, all with the background knocked out.

Etsy allows 20 MB per file and 5 files per Etsy listing. That's five slots for a design that ships in seven sizes β€” and the tumbler wrap alone, full bleed with nothing transparent to compress, can cross 20 MB by itself.

The file-size math

What you deliverRealistic size
20 oz tumbler wrap, full bleed (2850 Γ— 2490 px)6–20 MB
11 oz + 15 oz mug wraps (pair)4–14 MB
Adult tee design, 12 Γ— 16 in (3600 Γ— 4800 px)8–25 MB
Youth, toddler, and pocket exports (3 files)4–12 MB
Seamless pattern tile (3600 Γ— 3600 px)5–15 MB
One design across every blank size30–85 MB
20-design seasonal bundle, all sizes600 MB – 1.7 GB
Etsy's ceiling per Etsy listing5 files Γ— 20 MB

At 300 DPI, inches are pixels. An adult tee design at 12 Γ— 16 inches is 3,600 Γ— 4,800 px. A 20 oz skinny tumbler wrap at roughly 9.5 Γ— 8.3 inches is 2,850 Γ— 2,490 px β€” and because a wrap is full bleed, every one of those 7 million pixels carries color. There's no empty canvas for PNG to throw away.

Cut-out lettering compresses fine, because most of the canvas is transparent. Watercolor florals, retro grain textures, and airbrushed gradients do not. Those are exactly the styles that sell in sublimation, and they're the worst case for lossless compression.

Zipping the folder saves almost nothing. PNG is already deflate-compressed, so a zip of twelve PNGs is roughly the sum of twelve PNGs. It doesn't get you under 20 MB. It just hands Etsy one larger file to refuse.

What buyers of sublimation designs expect

The complete delivery in this niche looks like this:

Mug wraps (300 DPI PNG)

11 oz and 15 oz are different heights, so they're two separate exports, not one file resized. Full-wrap art has to reach the template edge so the seam closes.

Tumbler wraps (300 DPI PNG)

20 oz skinny straight, usually with a tapered version. Full bleed means every pixel carries color β€” the heaviest file in the set, and the blank buyers ask for most.

Shirt sizes (300 DPI transparent PNG)

Adult full front at 12 Γ— 16 in, then youth, toddler, and pocket. Each is its own export so the buyer never has to scale anything.

Seamless patterns

Tileable 12 Γ— 12 in repeats at 300 DPI for all-over blanks, socks, and fabric. Full bleed by definition β€” there is no transparent area.

Mockups and commercial license

JPG mockups buyers use in their own listings, plus the PDF terms that let them sell what they press.

Why Etsy's 20 MB Γ— 5 cap bites here

The five-file limit breaks first. One design in the sizes buyers expect β€” 11 oz mug, 15 oz mug, 20 oz tumbler, adult tee, youth tee β€” is exactly five files. Nothing left for the toddler size, the seamless version, the mockups, or the commercial-use license. And that's one design.

Then the 20 MB limit takes the tumbler wraps. When a wrap crosses the cap, the only two ways under it are the two things you can't do: drop the resolution or throw away the alpha channel. Both change what the buyer presses onto the blank.

The workarounds sellers use β€” and what they cost

Every sublimation designs seller has tried at least one of these.

1. Flatten the background or export as JPG

Drop the alpha channel and save as JPG. The file shrinks by most of its size and uploads without complaint.

The problem: JPG has no transparency, and its compression never leaves a background pure white β€” it leaves near-white pixels and halo artifacts along every edge. Those print. The buyer presses a shirt and finds a faint rectangle with a ghost outline around the artwork. Anyone using your PNG for DTF gets a literal white box.

2. Downscale to 150 DPI

Halve the resolution, quarter the file size, and it still looks fine on screen.

The problem: Sublimation prints 1:1 at physical size β€” there's no crop and no viewing distance to hide behind. At 150 DPI a 9.5-inch wrap shows soft edges and stair-stepped lettering, and smooth gradients posterize into visible bands on a glossy tumbler. Gradients are everywhere in this niche.

3. Ship one size and tell buyers to resize

Upload the largest file only, with a note in the listing saying 'resize to fit your blank.'

The problem: Buyers scale in Design Space or Print Manager, lose the aspect ratio, and the wrap stops meeting at the seam. The exact-size exports are the work they paid for. Remove them and you're selling the same PNG as everyone else.

4. Split the set into Part 1 / Part 2 zips

Spread the sizes across the five listing slots as numbered zip files.

The problem: Five full slots still cap you at 100 MB, which isn't one seasonal bundle. And buyers download part one on an iPad, never open part two, then message you asking where the tumbler files went.

5. A PDF containing a Drive or Dropbox link

Upload a one-page PDF to the Etsy listing; the real files live in your cloud folder.

The problem: Sublimation buyers come back to re-download a design the week before a craft fair, which is exactly when a moved folder or an expired link surfaces. A dead link on a Friday night is a message you answer on Saturday morning.

Deliver sublimation designs the simple way

OrderFiles works alongside your Etsy shop. You keep your listings, your reviews, and your traffic β€” the files just stop being the problem.

1

Upload every blank size at full 300 DPI

Create a product in OrderFiles and drop the whole set in β€” mug wraps, tumbler wraps, every tee size, the seamless tiles, mockups, license. Files up to 5 GB each and 50 GB of storage, so a 25 MB wrap is a rounding error and a seasonal bundle is one product.

2

Match the product to your Etsy listing

OrderFiles matches incoming orders to products by Etsy listing title. Use the same title and there's nothing else to configure.

3

Forward your Etsy order emails

Point Etsy's order confirmations at OrderFiles with one mail rule. Every order is verified and matched to the right design automatically, including the 2 a.m. ones.

4

Buyers get the whole set on one page

A branded download page with every blank size β€” original PNGs, alpha channel intact, nothing flattened and nothing resampled. The press is warming up before you know there was an order.

Order verified β€” downloads unlocked. That's the whole buyer experience.
