How to Sell Quilt Patterns Over 20MB on Etsy
A quilt pattern is almost never one file. A single release carries an instruction booklet with yardage charts for baby through king, a foundation paper piecing set that has to print at exactly 100%, a large-format sheet for the copy shop, a rotary-cutting version for quilters who won't tear paper, and a coloring page for planning fabric placement. The full-size printable pages are where the megabytes live.
Etsy caps every uploaded file at 20 MB and gives you 5 file slots per listing. A 40 × 50 in template sheet blows past that on its own, before you've uploaded a single page of instructions.

Page area is the whole story. A letter-size template page at 300 dpi is about 8 megapixels. A 40 × 50 in copy-shop sheet at the same resolution is 180. Designers who flatten that sheet before selling it — a normal step to keep the line work from being pulled apart in a PDF editor — end up with one page weighing more than most complete patterns.
Then multiply. Most releases ship two construction methods, foundation paper piecing and rotary cutting, across four or five finished sizes, each with its own cutting chart and yardage table. A baby-quilt-only pattern fits under the cap. A full release with both methods and every size runs 60-170 MB against Etsy's 100 MB total ceiling.

The 5-file limit bites before the 20 MB one does. Instruction booklet, FPP templates, large-format sheet, rotary version, coloring page — that's five slots gone with nothing spare. Split any one of them into parts and something else has to come out of the listing.
What comes out is almost always the large-format sheet, and that's the file experienced quilters go looking for. Someone piecing a king-size top is not going to trim and tape 80 letter-size pages, and they read the reviews to find out whether you included the copy-shop version before they buy.

The workarounds sellers use — and what they cost
Every quilt patterns seller has tried at least one of these.
1. Compress the templates until they fit
Run the PDF through a compressor, downsample the images, flatten the layers, and keep going until it squeaks under 20 MB.
The problem: Quarter-inch seam lines and registration marks go soft, and every re-export is another chance for the page geometry to shift. Print a template at 97% and a 12 in finished block finishes at 11 5/8 — the blocks stop fitting their sashing, and the buyer blames your pattern, not their printer.
2. Split the pattern into Part 1 / Part 2 files
Break the template set into chunks that each land under the cap and upload them as separate files.
The problem: Paper piecing sets are numbered by block section. A buyer who never downloaded Part 2 finds out halfway through the quilt, and you find out at 11pm on a Sunday.
3. A one-page PDF with a Dropbox or Drive link
Upload a cover sheet containing a link; the real pattern lives in your cloud storage.
The problem: Folders get reorganized, links expire, and shared files throttle the week your quilt goes around Instagram. Buyers who purchased three years ago still expect that link to work, and you are the only person who can fix it when it doesn't.
4. Ship one construction method, or letter-size only
Pick FPP or rotary cutting and drop the other, or skip the large-format sheet to save a slot.
